Available Materials for the LCM-Process

Lithoz offers its customers various materials for additive manufacturing of high-performance ceramics. Each raw material is perfectly adjusted to fit Lithoz ‘ complete system and enables the production of high-quality parts.

Lithoz’ ceramic materials enable the production of parts which exhibit equal or similar material properties to conventionally manufactured parts. Especially considering density and stability, additively manufactured components are in accordance with the high requirements of the ceramic industry and ceramic research.

STANDARD MATERIALS


ALUMINUM OXIDE

Alumina (Al2O3) is one of the most important oxide ceramic materials and characterized by high hardness, corrosion and temperature resistance. Components made of alumina are electrically insulating, puncture-proof and therefore suitable for a wide range of applications such as substrates in the electronics industry, thread guides in textile engineering, protection in thermal processes, etc. It can be used not only for industrial applications, but also in medical engineering for permanent implants or devices, due to its high biocompatibility.

With LithaLox HP 500, Lithoz provides a high-purity aluminum oxide (99.99 %) with outstanding material properties. It is characterized by a high density (99.4 % relative density), a high four-point bending strength (430 MPa) and a very smooth surface (Ra ≈ 0.4 μm).

LithaLox 350D can be used not only for industrial applications but also in medical engineering as permanent implants and surgery devices due to its high biocompatibility and bioinertness. With LithaLox 350D, Lithoz provides a high-purity aluminum oxide (99.8 %) with outstanding material properties. It is developed for the realization of highly complex components with small channels and holes.

ZIRCONIUM OXIDE

LithaCon 3Y 610 purple is a 3 mol% stabilized zirconia. Excellent strength, fracture toughness, resistance to abrasion and thermal shock resistance are the mechanical highlights of this material. These properties in combination with its chemical resistance, even at elevated temperatures, make zirconia the perfect material for structural elements.

Zirconia is used for applications with extreme demands on the material. High-end metal forming, valves, bearings and cutting tools are some of the applications which exploit the mechanical properties of zirconia. The biocompatibility of zirconia facilitates the use in medical applications such as dental applications and as part of permanent implants.

SILICON NITRIDE

LithaNit 720 is a Beta-SiAlON type ceramic. It exhibits superior material properties such as high strength, high toughness, thermal shock resistance and good chemical resistance to corrosion by many acids and alkalis. Besides that, LithaNit 720 parts can be used at temperatures up to 1200 °C.

LithaNit 720 has a wide range of applications such as insulators, springs, impellers, etc. Furthermore, it offers great possibilities for medical engineering of permanent implants, due to its osteointegrative potential and anti-infective properties.

MATERIALS FOR SPECIAL APPLICATIONS


BONE-REPLACEMENT MATERIAL TRICALCIUM PHOSPHATE

Tricalcium phosphate (TCP) exhibits excellent biocompatibility, bioresorbability, osteoconductivity and is therefore a well-established material for bone replacement in regenerative medicine. Due to its properties it is possible to fabricate patient-specific resorbable implants with defined pore structures and pore geometries. During the healing phase such kind of implants will be resorbed by the body and replaced with native bone tissue, thus a second surgery for removal of the implant is not necessary.


LithaBone 300 is a beta-tricalcium phosphate (ß-TCP) based ceramic. By variation of the sinter regime relative densities up to 97% with a corresponding bending strength of 34 MPa can be achieved. Lithoz aims to support the validation process of your medical device in the best way and therefore only ASTM F1088 - 04a certified (suitable for human implants) TCP powder is used in LithaBone 300. Sintered parts made from LithaBone 300 are proven to be not cytotoxic according to the ISO 10993-5:2009 standard.

SILICA-BASED MATERIALS FOR CASTING CORES

LithaCore 450 is mainly based on silica with addition of alumina and zircon. It is used for the production of casting cores for investment casting. Typical applications include single crystal casting of turbine blades. LithaCore 450 is developed for the additive manufacturing of precise ceramic cores with fine details and high accuracy. Sintered ceramic cores made from LithaCore 450 have very low thermal dilatation up to 1500 °C, a high porosity, outstanding surface quality and a very good leachability.

TAKE ADVANTAGE OF OUR OPEN SYSTEM

With the CeraFab systems Lithoz offers its customers an open system with which a multitude of ceramic materials can be processed. This enables the processing of individual, customer-specific powders without modifying it. Basically the LCM-technology is suited for processing sinterable powders. In the past years, the following materials (amongst others) have been processed successfully using the LCM-technology:

• dielectrical ceramics • cermets • magnesium oxide
• hydroxyapatite • cordierite • hydrogels
• bioglass • porcelain
